In disk utility, in the partitions tab, there is an options button. You can change the partition scheme but that requires reformatting the external. If it's an apple partition map or a master boot record it wont work. The solution for me was to restart the Mac just pushing AltĪrriving at this point you need to select not your MacintoshHD but the one on the right instead which is the image of your Mac. In order to boot from an external on an intel based mac, the external needs to be partitioned as a GUID partition table. You already tried to partition the disk multiple times but it keeps erroring with the Error: -61
I believe you followed the official guides and you tried to factory reset your Mac and you find yourself in this situation: the disk is locked and you cannot select it for re-installation
